Vern Schmidt Sr. - A Musical Legacy

Please be patient while the images are downloading. Thanks!

Since publishing the bus pictures and story about Clem Rohde, I have been contacted by several people in search of memories of musicians who played in the Rhode band. One in particular is Rachel Schmidt; the great granddaughter of Vernon (Vern) Schmidt Sr. (1914-1984). While researching family history on the Internet, Rachel stumbled upon our website and our story about the Clem Rohde bus. She was able to provide us information about Vern and his connection to the Rohde band.

Vern got his musical talents from his father Henning and his uncle Oscar. Oscar played the harp and Henning played the drums. In the Mid 1930's Vern's parents bought him an Art deco piano which remains in the family today. At age 15, Vern attended the MacPhail School of music until he graduated from high school. He also received organ lessons through an organist at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Through the years Vern played for several groups including the Knights Of Harmony.

According to Rachel, Vern played piano in the Clem Rohde band from the mid 1940's through the mid 1950's. Vern was even paid an extra .50 to drive the bus because he was the only one who didn't drink! After leaving the Rohde band, Vern went onto form his own group, Vern's Club Combo.

Vern Schmidt Sr. left a musical legacy with the majority of his children; grandchildren and great grandchildren all play musical instruments. I want to thank Rachel and her family for allowing us to share these wonderful photographs and stories of her great grandfather Vern.
